Instant ID: Usernames without a generation server
Instant ID creates usernames and fictional profiles in your browser. You can copy a username or download a batch as JSON.
The starting point
I wanted the username part of a fictional identity generator without a server that creates each result.
Fake Name Generator helped define the workflow: generate a name, review the details, then copy what you need.
Instant ID uses original word lists and a simpler profile. It does not copy the site's identity records.
Keep generation in the browser
I wrote the generator in Go and compiled the code to WebAssembly. WebAssembly lets the browser run the compiled Go code.
A small JavaScript interface sends your options to Go. Go returns the usernames and a fictional profile.
The generator page loads its own files without analytics scripts. Generation does not send your options or results to a server.
After the page loads, you can generate results without a network connection. You still need a connection to load the page again.
Each batch starts with a fresh random seed from the browser. Go uses the browser’s cryptographic random source through its standard library.
Larger word, syllable, and name lists give the three styles more combinations. No clock value or personal browser data sets the seed.
Use the tool
- Select a username style: Word pair, Invented, or Name-based.
- Select a separator.
- Select the number of trailing digits.
- Select a batch size.
- Select Generate usernames.
- Select Copy beside the username you want.
To copy the full batch, select Copy all. To save the results, select Download JSON.
Select a username to use that name in the profile's email address. Select New profile to replace the fictional details.
Know the limits
The tool checks for duplicate usernames within each batch. It does not check whether a username is available on another service.
The word and name lists are finite. The profiles contain a name, occupation, birthday, and an example.com email address.
The email address is not a working mailbox. A generated username is not a password.
The tool does not create country-specific identity records, street addresses, or financial identifiers.
Check the result
Go checks cover the supported styles, separators, digit counts, valid dates, duplicate results, and invalid options.
Browser checks cover copying, profile selection, JSON export, offline generation after loading, and the layout on a small screen.
The result is a small tool you can open, use, and close. The generation server is one less service to maintain.
